Child Photography

Now this is a fun age to photograph... 5-6 months old when they are barely crawling but can sit up...girls are so cute in tutu's it is ridiculous!  Hats and bows are always great props for infants.  Boys of course don't get those props but they are cute left on their own snuggling a parent or laying in a basket.

Toddler Photography

When photographing children, the most important thing to keep in mind is not try to pose them cause they will never pose. They’d rather play than pose for a cam to take their picture. So one of the tips I wanna share with you today is, give them something to play with. Give them a teddy bear, a painting book, some Lego…. whatever you have that can keep them busy while you take your shots. Just make sure to choose your props carefully cause when a kid gets their hands on something, often times they won’t let it go so always give them something that you don’t mind it ending up in the photo.

You need to interact with the kid. Keep them happy and peppy. Always have a smile on your face, and start talking to them and asking them questions so when they raise up their heads to answer with an interesting look on their face, you can just take the shot right away.

Now if you’re shooting newborns, there are definitely some considerations. A newborn can’t really move around, or always interact. But you don’t need to have that stop you from getting a nice picture. Try some new unconventional approaches like, take off their diaper and have them butt naked. Then put them against a nice plain black or white background depending on their skin tone, or lay them on a soft textured blanket for example. Take your time, shoot from different perspectives, zoom in on their tiny little hands or feet, and so on.

Now if you wanna get a natural looking portrait of a tot, you need to get down to the child’s eye level. And always set your cam to continuous shooting mode and continuous focus and try to keep your hand on the shutter release button from time to time, taking multiple exposures in the hope of capturing some interesting reaction from the child.

Newborn Photography

The ideal time to book a newborn session is in your 3rd trimester.  I only book a limited number of photo sessions each month and my schedule fills up quickly. If you are nearing your due date or just had a baby, please still contact me for current session openings. I love newborns and will do my best to fit you in!

I prefer to photograph newborns during their first few week of life after coming home from the hospital, or when your baby is between 10-12 days old. I think waiting a few days after the babies face fills out a bit and they are better able to tolerate not being swaddled is a good option, but every baby is different.

Your newborn session will take place in the comfort of your own home. I will look for the room in your home that has the best indirect natural light and set up my portable studio there. I bring all my newborn hats, baskets, blankets and props to every session! If you desire, I can also take some family and sibling portraits with your newborn. In the spring, summer and early fall, we can go outside and find some shaded areas in your yard for some outdoor portraits as well. Newborn sessions typically last about 1 hour.

In remembrance of Emma

This is a posting in remembrance of a beautiful little girl I was fortunate to meet on several locations while photographing her family.  She passed away of unknown causes a few weeks ago.  The baby grid is Emma a few months old.

Emma photographed in September 2011 only a few weeks before the tragic event.  She will be missed greatly.

Family Photography

I mostly shoot children and their families on location either in their home or at a park. Children are most comfortable at home or in nature.  Studio shots can be really amazing too, but this is a nice way to make it easier on a family of four.  My goal is to bring out the personality in each child, so I basically let them do what they do best...this little girl loved being a ham for the camera and it made great photos!

These last photos were in their backyard...this is my favorite shot!

Baby Photography

 These are some of my favorite of this little baby girl!  At this age you can do some pretty cute things with babies...get creative!  Baskets, pots, blankets, and color!  She is sitting in a lobster pot because the parents are from Maine! Love it!
